Plaza Olavide

This square is sited in north-central Madrid between the areas of Chamberi and Iglesi. Off the tourist track, this lovely space has enough room to act as a playground for children and is lined with cafes that are filled with tables where you can enjoy a snack or two.

Cafe de Chinitas Restaurant

The Cafe de Chinitas has a long tradition in Spain's capital. It is one of the most famous tablaos (flamenco restaurants) in the world. The Cafe occupies an 18th Century mansion close to the central Gran Vía area. It offers Mediterranean cuisine and an excellent flamenco show every evening.

Located right in the heart of Madrid just a short distance from the Senate and the lively Gran Via, Cafe de Chinitas mixes international cuisine with wonderful flamenco. The restaurant is popular with both visitors and locals and the restaurant dance troupe performs everyday with an invited guest star.

Gran Cafe de Gijon

Since its opening in 1888, It was a regular meeting place for intellectuals and writers. This cafe still attracts a loyal clientele made up of journalists and literary types. Famous poets and novelists like Federico Garcia Lorca, Antonio Machado, Ruben Dario and Perez Galdos all have spent time here. The restaurant specializes in international cuisine with an emphasis on meats. However, you can also choose from a range of regional Spanish dishes. The Asturian varieties are the best. Try Hake cooked in Cider or Grilled Sea Bass. The wine list features fine wines from Rioja and Ribera del Duero.

Cafe Circulo de Bellas Artes

It is a soaring hall on the ground floor of Madrid´s art center. The cafe combines a friendly  atmosphere, excellent food and good coffee at reasonable prices. A wonderful place for lunch not far from Madrid´s shopping or museums.

Cafe Commercial

This cafe is one of the oldest and continuously operating cafe in Madrid opened in the 1880´s. It has been run by the same family since the earliest days of the 20th century. There´s a modern internet cafe upstairs, but the downstairs retains a full roster of traditional tertullias and classic loungers. With all the specialties that is fully Madrid, you will feel very personal here.

Café Gijon

It is a historic literary cafe on the Paseo. The outdoor terraza is particularly nice in the summer.

Cafe de Oriente

The cafe faces the Palais Real, overlooking the beautiful Plaza Oriente. You can enjoy a sip of your favourite coffee on outdoor tables of the cafe during summer and cozy indoor rooms in the cold months. The basement banquet room with a glass floor over ancient remains will make you wish for an excuse to throw a party. The cafe will serves an excellent food.

Nuevo Cafe Barbieri

Nuevo Cafe is located in the heart of Madrid´s most international neighborhood. This slightly scruffy cafe is busy and draws a large crowd at night.

La Mallorquina

The cafe is famous for its pastries. This vintage bakery has a peaceful upstairs room where you can linger undisturbed over your cafe con leche and napolitana de chocolate (chocolate croissant).

Cafe Pabellon del Espejo

Although dates only from 1978, this Madrid cafe gives the customers a relic look glided of age. The cafe is filled with crowd by lunch starting about 1:30. So don´t plan on lingering over just a coffee for the afternoon. You can enjoy good food at this cafe.

Cafe Central

This is one of the classic cafes in the Madrid area. By day the cafe is a busy place various coffee lovers and it plays host to jazz bands at night.

Chocolateria San Gines

Famous for its pudding-thick hot chocolate and its fresh from the deep fryer churros (twisted pieces of fried batter designed to sprinkle with sugar or dip into chocolate), this cafe also offers the usual assortment of coffees and teas. But you may be surprised by the gang of young and those young at heart flocking to this cafe towards night. The cafe is best appreciated very late at night (which, in Madrid, basically coincides with sunrise) after a night of dancing or partying. The cafe is located at the metro stop.

Teatriz

This former theater is now a trendy bar-cafe. Teatriz, formerly El Teatro Beatriz, combines avant-garde design and traditional architecture to create an artsy and eclectic ambience. The site houses two bars, one cozy and smug and the other spacious and velvety. The cafe is open nearly all day as well. Although very upscale, Teatriz is quite popular and attracts an appealing crowd.

Samarkanda

Take a break from your citybreak adventure to relax in a coffee. Samarkanda is a lovely Cafe that has a terrace overlooking a tropical garden right in the heart of the beautiful Atocha railway station. The food is very cheap and you can have sandwhiches and other snacks from here.
