Madrid Christmas Lights 2026: Switch-On Date and a Walking Route Through the Centre
Where to stand for the switch-on concert, what hours Gran Vía keeps, and a walk from Plaza de Colón to Plaza de España, stop by stop, with prices and closed days.
By Lieke DoornWalking routes, quiet hours and the barrios worth slowing down in

The lights come on at 19:30 on Saturday 21 November 2026, at a switch-on concert on Plaza de Cibeles. Gran Vía carries the main run of the 2026/27 display, a canopy of warm-white garlands strung high between the 1920s facades. The season closes with the Three Kings parade on 5 January 2027.
The switch-on at Plaza de Cibeles
Plaza de Cibeles is KM.0 of the display, and the official switch-on concert is there at 19:30 on Saturday 21 November 2026. The white wedding-cake Palacio de Cibeles is washed in coloured light. In front of it the Cibeles fountain and its lion-drawn chariot are floodlit, a tall illuminated fir stands alongside, and the Alcalá light arches run off to one side.
The square is free and open through the rest of the season. For the concert it is fenced and it fills early, so be in place well before 19:30.

From Colón to Cibeles on Paseo de Recoletos
El Ángel de Madrid (Plaza de Colón) is an 18-metre angel figure outlined in 36,400 LED points, in the Jardines del Descubrimiento. The enormous Spanish flag and the Columbus monument stand beside it, the glass towers of the Castellana behind. It replaced the nativity that used to occupy this spot, and it is the biggest free set piece in the display. The plaza is open and free, and the photo line forms on the Recoletos side.
From Colón, the Feria Mercado de Artesanía de la Comunidad de Madrid (Paseo de Recoletos) runs down the central promenade towards Cibeles, 130 white-canopied stalls in a long double line, with illuminated cherry-tree light forms in the trees overhead. Potters and silversmiths work at the counters, and the makers come from across Spain. It is free, open 1 to 30 December 2026, 11:00 to 21:00, and it closes at 15:00 on 24 December. Walk it before 21:00, while the counters are still working.

Gran Vía and Cortylandia at Callao

Gran Vía Christmas Lights (Gran Vía) run from 21 November to 6 January, 18:00 to midnight, and to 01:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. The Telefónica tower and the Metropolis dome stay lit behind the strings, and wet asphalt reflects them.
After 18:00 this is the most crowded stretch in Madrid. Agree a meeting point at Callao or the Plaza del Callao steps before you walk it. Nothing here is lit before 18:00, so keep the daylight hours for the markets and for the afternoon passes at Cortylandia.
Cortylandia (El Corte Inglés, Preciados-Callao) turns a department-store facade on the pedestrian street into a mechanical stage set. Oversized animated puppet figures move among painted scenery flats under floodlit colour, with a dense crowd of children on shoulders below. Passes last 11 minutes and run hourly, 12:00 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 21:00, from 21 November to 5 January. None run on 25 December or 1 January. The street packs out, so arrive 15 minutes before a pass starts. It is free, outdoors and standing only, and a local institution.

Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor
On Puerta del Sol, the red-brick Real Casa de Correos stands under strings of light with its white clock tower above them, and the Tío Pepe neon sign glows over the rooftops. Inside the building's courtyard, a 130 m² nativity is set against a dark starlit backdrop. It is the one major indoor stop on a lights walk, and it is warm.
The nativity opens 28 November to 6 January, 10:00 to 22:00, with short hours on 24 and 31 December, and it shuts on 25 December and 1 January. The square and the nativity are both free. The route through it runs one way and it queues at weekends, so go on a weekday morning, which also lines up with the 10:00 opening on Plaza Mayor.
The Mercado de Navidad de la Plaza Mayor (Plaza Mayor) fills the arcaded ochre square with 104 small green-and-white wooden huts in tight rows, the bronze equestrian statue of Felipe III in the middle of them. Trays of hand-painted belén figures and moss sit under bare bulbs, and the same huts sell joke-shop wigs. This is the oldest Christmas market in the city. Entry is free, and it runs 27 November to 31 December 2026, 10:00 to 21:00, and to 22:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. The aisles between the huts are narrow and a large group bottlenecks in them, so come before 18:00 or split up.

La Navideña on Plaza de España
La Navideña (Plaza de España) spreads 40 craft and food chalets across the remodelled square, with the Cervantes monument and the Torre de Madrid lit behind and a giant illuminated bauble at the Sabatini Gardens end. Food, circus and street theatre run through it. The market is free, open from late November to 6 January, 10:00 to 21:00, and to 22:00 on Fridays, Saturdays and holiday eves.
The 450 m² rink beside the chalets is open-air and laid with natural ice, the only central one. Skating is sold by session, so book a slot in advance.
Rooftops on Alcalá and Plaza de España

The Azotea del Círculo de Bellas Artes (Calle Alcalá) sits 56 m up on the roof of a 1920s cultural centre: white classical statuary and a Minerva figure on the parapet, loungers and a bar behind them, the lit Gran Vía and the Metropolis dome laid out below. The lift ticket is €6, or €5 reduced, the cheapest way to see the whole light grid from above. It stays open until 01:30, and until 02:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.
The terrace takes walk-ins. Table service is by reservation at [email protected] or +34 911 170 062, and a party of six or more should book ahead. The roof is exposed, so dress for a December night.
The 360º Rooftop Bar (Hotel Riu Plaza España, Plaza de España) is the highest open terrace in the centre, a wrap-around deck on the 27th floor with a glass-floored walkway cantilevered over the drop. The floodlit Royal Palace and the Almudena cathedral stand on one side, the lit Gran Vía runs east, and the Plaza de España tree and market sit directly below. Entry is through a separate street door at the rear, with a cover charge of €5 off-peak and €10 at prime time. Cocktails are €13. It opens daily 11:00 to 02:00, tables can be booked in advance, and the queue at peak hours is long.
The lights from a bus on Calle Alfonso XII
Navibus Madrid loads on Calle Alfonso XII, beside the Retiro railings, an open-top double-decker whose upper deck passes under the garlands of Alcalá and Gran Vía. It runs 23 November 2026 to 7 January 2027, departing every 15 minutes from 18:00 to 22:15. A circuit takes 50 minutes and starts at €12, with commentary in Spanish and English. Big Bus Madrid and Yellow Tours operate it, and private hire with pick-up and return is arranged at [email protected] or +34 691 410 717. The old municipal Naviluz brand has no live booking site this season.

Ticketed light parks outside the centre
Naturaleza Encendida has moved. The Alice in Wonderland edition runs 24 November 2026 to 10 January 2027 in the Real Jardín Botánico Alfonso XIII at Ciudad Universitaria, Metro L6, not the Real Jardín Botánico by the Prado, where earlier editions ran. People still turn up at the wrong garden. You enter through a tunnel of synchronised LED arches, then walk past Alice tableaux, an oversized Cheshire Cat and a Queen of Hearts built in glowing LED armature, projections thrown onto hedges and tree trunks, and costumed performers on the path. Tickets start at €16 for a 45-minute route, with timed entry every 15 minutes, so pick a slot and arrive for it.

Mágicas Navidades (Torrejón de Ardoz) is the biggest light park in the region, 100,000 m² of floodlit ground with 15 experiences: a giant Ferris wheel in coloured light, an ice rink laid over a lake, walk-through illuminated arches, carved-ice sculptures in a refrigerated hall and fireworks over the treeline. It runs 14 November 2026 to 10 January 2027. General tickets start at €5, with 20% discounts on set launch dates, and the individual experiences are ticketed separately. The train out of central Madrid takes 25 minutes. Budget a half-day.
Getávoli (Getafe Recinto Ferial) is new, 3 December 2026 to 10 January 2027. A 12-metre nativity built entirely from PLAYMOBIL figures stands behind glass, with a natural-ice rink under strung bulbs, a carousel and a small train around it. Entry to the enclosure and the nativity is free, with no booking. Skating is €10 for residents and €12 for visitors, and Santa's house is €6 to €8. Daily opening hours had not been published in early November, so check before you travel.
The Three Kings parade on 5 January
The Cabalgata de Reyes Magos de Madrid closes the season on Tuesday 5 January 2027 from 18:30, running from San Juan de la Cruz to Recoletos and Cibeles. Three towering illuminated floats carry the Magi down the wide Paseo de la Castellana after dark, sweets arc into the crowd packed behind the barriers, and fireworks burst over Plaza de Cibeles at the finish.

It is free and street-side. Pavement space on the Castellana is claimed hours in advance, so arrive by 17:00 if you are bringing children, or pick one of the quieter district parades instead. The detailed 2027 route was still unpublished in early November, so confirm it nearer the date.
Dates, closures and booking
The Sol nativity and Cortylandia both close on 25 December and 1 January, the Plaza Mayor market ends on 31 December, and the craft fair on Recoletos shuts early on 24 December. Book the botanic trail slot, the skating sessions and a rooftop table before you arrive, and check the parade route and Getávoli's hours nearer the date.
